President Donald Trump threatened to strike Iran’s power plants

calendar 22/03/2026 - 09:00 UTC

Bloomberg:
President Donald Trump threatened to strike Iran’s power plants if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened to commercial traffic within 48 hours. However, damage to Iran’s electricity sector is not expected to have an immediate impact on global energy supply. The threat comes despite earlier signals from Trump suggesting a potential reduction in military activity.

At the same time, Iran launched long-range missiles toward the naval base in Diego Garcia, a joint US-UK military facility in the Indian Ocean located approximately 4,000 km from Iran.

The Wall Street Journal:
The report raises questions about the absence of Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not been seen or heard from since assuming his role about two weeks ago. According to the analysis, while intelligence sources believe he may have been critically injured, the Iranian regime is using AI-generated content and visual propaganda to project stability and continuity.

Markets:
The S&P 500 declined by 1.5%, while the Nasdaq Composite fell by 2.0%. After the close, President Trump stated that he is considering reducing US involvement in Iran, adding that “we are close to achieving our objectives.” Following these remarks, markets moved higher in after-hours trading, with the S&P 500 up 0.7% and the Nasdaq rising 0.9%.
